As global tensions rise and travel disruptions become more common, safety has never been more important for those exploring the world alone. For women in particular, feeling secure while traveling is often the deciding factor when choosing a destination.

Recent conflicts in the Middle East, flight chaos, and heightened security alerts — especially surrounding the situation involving Iran — have left many travelers unsettled. For women embarking on solo trips, these concerns weigh even more heavily. A new travel index sheds light on which countries offer the safest and most comfortable environments for solo female travelers.

Governments regularly issue travel advisories tailored specifically to women traveling alone. The Austrian Foreign Ministry, for example, warns that “caution is advised for women traveling alone” in popular destinations such as Turkey. Similar guidance applies to countries like Morocco, where cultural norms and safety conditions can pose additional challenges.

To better understand the needs of women on the road, the Solo Female Travel Index — compiled annually by travel company TUI — evaluates how well destinations support and protect women traveling independently.

The index analyzes 150 popular short‑ and long‑haul destinations, assessing factors such as women’s safety, accommodation and dining costs, and the richness of cultural offerings. The results reveal clear leaders.

Finland tops the ranking, followed closely by Sweden. Both Nordic countries excel across nearly all categories, from nighttime safety and gender equality to the reliability of public transportation.

Austria shares third place with Belgium and Denmark. According to the index, these countries’ stable social structures and dependable infrastructure create an environment where solo female travelers can move confidently and securely.

As global uncertainties continue to shape travel decisions, the index offers reassurance — and a reminder that some destinations remain exceptionally safe for women exploring the world on their own.
